TMS Therapy for OCD
TMS Therapy for OCD — A Breakthrough Treatment Without More Medication.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) targets the brain circuits behind many mental health conditions directly — no pills, no sedation, no downtime. At NeuroStim, 71.5% of our patients achieve significant improvement.
What Is TMS for OCD?
How TMS Therapy Treats OCD
OCD involves hyperactivity in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) loop — the brain circuit that generates intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. When this circuit is stuck in overdrive, it creates the relentless cycle of obsessions and compulsions that defines OCD.
TMS for OCD uses a specialized deep TMS coil (the H7 coil) to reach the anterior cingulate cortex and medial prefrontal cortex — key nodes in the OCD circuit. Targeted magnetic pulses reduce the hyperactivity driving the cycle, providing relief without the systemic side effects of medication.
Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes at one of our 16 treatment centers. Sessions include a brief symptom provocation protocol before stimulation — this activates the OCD circuit so TMS can target it precisely. You remain fully awake, and there’s no recovery time. Most patients drive themselves home after.

Is TMS Right for Your OCD?
▼
TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD in adults who haven’t responded adequately to SRI medication. If you’ve tried SSRIs, clomipramine, or ERP therapy without achieving lasting symptom relief, TMS may be the next step in your treatment.
TMS for OCD is most effective when used alongside ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) therapy — the gold-standard behavioral treatment for OCD. Many patients find TMS reduces the intensity of obsessions enough to make ERP significantly more tolerable and effective. Your NeuroStim clinician will work with your existing treatment team.
*TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD in adults (2018) using the BrainsWay Deep TMS H7 coil. Your clinician will assess whether TMS is appropriate for your specific OCD presentation and treatment history.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is TMS FDA-approved for OCD?
TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD (2018) using the BrainsWay Deep TMS H7 coil — making it one of only a handful of non-medication, non-surgical treatments with FDA clearance for this condition.
How is TMS for OCD different from TMS for depression?
TMS for OCD uses a specialized deep TMS coil (H7) that reaches deeper brain structures involved in the OCD circuit. Sessions also include a brief symptom provocation step before stimulation to activate and target the relevant circuit precisely.
How many sessions will I need for OCD?
A standard TMS course for OCD is 29–36 sessions over approximately 6 weeks. Sessions are about 20 minutes each. Many patients begin noticing symptom reduction within the first 2–3 weeks.
Does Insurance Cover TMS Therapy
Coverage for OCD-indicated TMS is growing. NeuroStim works with Premera Blue Cross, BCBS of Arizona, Regence, United Healthcare, Aetna, TriCare, VA/TriWest, and Kaiser. Our team handles insurance verification at no cost to you.
Can I continue ERP therapy during TMS?
Yes — and it’s encouraged. TMS and ERP are complementary. Many patients find TMS reduces obsession intensity enough to make ERP more tolerable and effective. Continuing behavioral therapy during TMS often produces better long-term outcomes.
Where are NeuroStim OCD treatment centers located?
