TMS Treatment
TMS Treatment — What to Expect, Start to Finish.
TMS treatment is a 6–7 week outpatient program with no medication, no sedation, and no downtime. Sessions are 15–30 minutes. You drive yourself home every day and continue your normal life throughout.
What Is TMS Treatment?
What Happens During TMS Treatment
Each TMS treatment session takes place at one of our clinics and lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. You’ll sit in a comfortable chair while a small magnetic coil is positioned near your scalp. The coil delivers targeted magnetic pulses to the specific brain region being treated — you’ll feel a light tapping sensation at the treatment site, but no pain. Many patients read, listen to music, or simply relax during sessions.
A standard TMS treatment course consists of 30 to 36 sessions, delivered once per day, five days a week, over six to seven weeks. Treatment is entirely outpatient — there is no hospital stay, no sedation, and no anesthesia. You arrive at the clinic, complete your session, and drive home. Most patients continue working, exercising, and maintaining their normal schedule throughout the entire treatment course.
Some patients notice improvement within the first one to two weeks. For others, results build gradually as new, healthier brain circuits form over the course of treatment. Most patients report that benefits continue developing even after the final session — and for many, relief is durable and long-lasting.

What Is TMS Treatment?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS treatment is an FDA-approved, non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It is most commonly prescribed for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression, but is also used for anxiety, OCD, and PTSD.
TMS treatment differs from medication in a fundamental way: it is non-systemic, meaning it targets the brain’s circuits directly rather than traveling through the bloodstream. This is why TMS does not cause the side effects common to antidepressants — no weight gain, no sexual dysfunction, no emotional blunting, no nausea.
*TMS is FDA-approved for Major Depressive Disorder (2008) and FDA-cleared for OCD (2018). Your clinician will assess whether TMS is appropriate for your specific diagnosis and history.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is each TMS treatment session?
Each TMS treatment session lasts between 15 and 30 minutes depending on your protocol. There’s no prep, no gowns, no waiting for sedation. Most patients treat a session like a brief errand — some schedule during a lunch break or before work.
How many TMS treatment sessions will I need?
A standard TMS treatment course is 30 to 36 sessions, delivered once per day, five days a week, over six to seven weeks. NeuroStim also offers Accelerated TMS and our proprietary One-Day TMS™ protocol for eligible patients.
When will I start feeling results?
Many patients begin to notice improvement within the first one to two weeks of TMS treatment. For others, changes become apparent later in the course. It’s also common for benefits to continue developing after treatment ends as the brain consolidates new neural pathways.
Does TMS treatment hurt?
TMS treatment is not painful. The most common sensation is a light tapping or clicking feeling on the scalp near the coil. Mild scalp discomfort or a brief headache after a session occurs in some patients early in treatment, and typically resolves quickly. Fewer than 5% of patients stopped treatment in clinical trials due to side effects.
Can I continue my normal routine during TMS treatment?
Yes — completely. TMS treatment does not require downtime of any kind. There is no sedation, no recovery period, and no restrictions on your activities. You can work, drive, exercise, and continue all your regular medications throughout treatment.
Does insurance cover TMS treatment?
TMS treatment is covered by most major insurance plans for patients diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder who have not had adequate response from at least one antidepressant. NeuroStim is in-network with Premera Blue Cross, BCBS of Arizona, Regence, United Healthcare, Aetna, TriCare, VA/TriWest, and Kaiser. Our team handles all verification before your first appointment — no surprises.
No sedation. No downtime. No medication. Just results.
