What Is TMS Treatment?

How TMS Treatment Works

TMS treatment targets the specific brain regions responsible for your condition. In depression, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is underactive. In anxiety and OCD, certain circuits are overactive. Medication addresses symptoms systemically — TMS goes directly to the source.

TMS brain stimulation process for anxiety — before, during, and after treatment

Each TMS treatment session uses a precisely calibrated magnetic coil placed against the scalp to deliver focused magnetic pulses. These pulses stimulate or modulate neural activity in the target region — restoring healthy brain communication without drugs, surgery, or sedation.

A full TMS treatment course is 36 sessions over 6–9 weeks at one of our 16 centers. Sessions typically last 15–20 minutes, you stay fully awake, and you can drive yourself home immediately afterward. Most patients return to work or daily activities the same day.

TMS treatment is FDA-approved for Major Depressive Disorder and FDA-cleared for OCD. It’s the go-to option for patients who haven’t gotten lasting results from medication — treatment-resistant cases where the standard pharmaceutical approach has fallen short.

TMS treatment integrates easily with your existing care. You can continue therapy or medication during your TMS course. Many patients find TMS amplifies the effects of treatments they’re already using. Your NeuroStim clinician coordinates with your current providers.
